Stolen bikes

Post by shaun »

Got up this morning to find both my road bikes had been pinched so if you see either a black and white Look 586 with SRAM Force group set and Dura Ace wheels or a Van Nicholas Yukon with SRAM Force for sale they may be mine and I'd appreciate a pm. Thanks Shaun

Sorry to hear about your theft Shaun.

This isn't the first theft of Clifton riders bikes from their property this year. I can't imagine it is anyone in the club passing on details of members bikes to the more unsavoury eliments of our society, more likely that you are spotted and possibly followed.

It is word of caution to everyone to be careful when going out or returning home on their bikes and to try and improve home security wherever possible.

Sorry to hear that Shaun. I will certainly let you know if I see that particularly good looking Look frame and the Van Nicholas anywhere on my travels.

Who are these people

Like Dan said this isnt the first theft this year so there must be some connection, some organised criminal gang after top end bikes to sell on.

BikeRadar did a couple of articles last year on how to improve shed (or outhouse, or garage) security:

I don't wish to be rude here but a bit of web savvy would not go a miss!

Look at the personal information you are showing in the left hand coloumn of this forum.

Dave C?

Ian?

The bad guys even know which road you live on, and its you who is telling them.

Remember this is a public forum.

Along the same lines as Simon's post, Garmin owners who use the Garmin Connect website should use the same level of caution as this can be accessed by anyone.

It may be just coincidence but shortly after uploading a few road rides I had a bike stolen from my garage.

There are Clifton riders using the Garmin website who use a login with the brand of their "expensive" bike and one (who lives round the corner) who has posted turbo training sessions at home. Both have given their location with pin point accuracy.

Rich.

Good points - may be best to only post garmin routes NOT starting and ending at home.

...and while we're on the subject....

Maybe "savvy" to refrain from publicising when we or our mates are going away on holiday?

You’re absolutely right Rob!…my in-laws were key members of a charity medical expedition to the Philippines a few years ago, it was written up in the York Evening Press that they were away on the expedition, a few days later their house was cleaned out by thieving b***stds. Please don’t ever mention holidays or work trips away on this public forum.

I don’t believe bike theft is about some one-off hit gang. The harsh reality of the market dynamics is that racing bikes, road or mtb, have moved firmly onto the radar of thieving low life…it’s now right up there with golf clubs and lawn mowers in terms of thieves’ priority list from home garages. In recent years, cycling has grown rapidly in popularity (equates to sizeable 2nd hand market for stolen goods), the internet offers many ways to sell 2nd hand goods (ie. thieves can sell stuff quickly and anonymously) and the value of road bikes has rocketed in recent years (equals nice profit for those dealing in stolen goods). We definitely need to be more vigilant, I’ve certainly been jolted into action by Shaun’s misfortune.

While we’re sharing tips, for those that don’t have bike insurance through organisations such as BC, I discovered that I needed to include a specific sum insured for my racing bike in my home contents insurance, otherwise the maximum I could have recovered is approx. £500. How many Cliftonites have bought a nice road bike in recent years and not rung their home insurer to include a specific amount for the replacement value of their new bike in their home contents insurance?…

On about insurance I've just renewed our house contents policy with M&S and they cover any article (including bikes) for upto £4k without having to declare them.

Wife works as a claims investigator for an insurance company and has read the policy booklet and can't see any catches, only you have to ensure the bikes are in a locked place eg garage etc.
