Clifton History enq. Lady Dorothea Gibb

Post by MarkA »

I am doing some research on the history of women's cycling. I came across a reference to Lady Dorothea Gibb, who claimed she was the fourth woman in York to ride a safety bicycle and was stoned by locals who disapproved. I have no date for this incident, although it's likely to be mid 1890s or possibly a bit earlier ?

As you were formed over 100 years ago, I was wondering about the extent of your archives and whether you could throw any light on the very early years of women cycling in York.
Picked this up on info mailing list. Sounds interesting. Can anyone help?
