Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

I appear to have the honour of kicking off this week.

There's the Wolds Sportif to hear about. 2 clubruns on Saturday with Howards mob tackling the delights of Park Rash, do-tell. Then there's the new shorter ride, that needs a name.... and, the world needs to know - did Broomwagon stay in bed after all?

I joined the Sunday clubrun. Classic example of a doom-and-gloom radio weather-forcast in the morning to be followed by a perfectly reasonable cycling day. Joined 5 others in the Square for a jaunt round Dalby - Troutsdale. Helen, John, Andy (just moved from Manchester and this was his hardest ride for some time - fantatstic effort), Andy G (first clubride after breaking his back and shoulder last September, I kid you not), Muzzy and me. Bit of a shower in the Vale of Pickering which didn't come to much. Very early cafe stop at Thornton le Dale (10-45, the Saturday lot would still be comparing tackle in The Square  ). Then on to the Dalby Toll road - if you wanted to design a road to ride on, it would be like this. Through Langdale End, then turn south along Troutsdale (a very hard 6 miles). Then home via Rillington, Langton and Buttercrambe. 90 odd miles and making cup of tea in kitchen at 3-15... Thanks for the company guys.

What's the average number of people that turn up to the sunday club runs? I might come on one some day, used to always be the sunday run I did. Sounds a really good route you did there I especially like the road through dalby forest if that's what you did, nice when it rains too.

I did the H group, was 138 miles for me, park rash was scary, it must be as hard as rosedale chimney that S bend, I was scared my tyre might have blew out the amount of breaking needed

The bit coming up the park rash is really fun though, just a long windy drag where you can happilly sit in the big ring but lukilly I changed down to the little as round the corner out of the blue you get this 20% climb on the other side of park rash.

138 miles - 18.5mph average, lukilly the wind was behind on the way back.

I did the 'shorter ride that needs a name' on Saturday, five of us Arthur, Richard, Andy, Darren and myself rode out via Tadcaster, and round to the climb through Kirkby Overblow I believe before returning on the Tuesday chaingang route. A chance to ride some unfamiliar roads and be home before dinner time, even with the drama of Richard's crash as he tried to avoid the imaginary dog that ran out into the road (at least that was his story).

Went out at 8am for a Saturday training ride on my own as I wanted to be back early, had a good ride round Wass and Hawnby then headed down White Horse Bank, felt a bit guilty just riding down it so I turned round and rode up and down it again ( I think Howard would have expected that of me).

Went for a quick cafe stop in Kilburn then saw all kevins group going towards Kilburn as I was flying home with a good tail wind behind me.

Wolds Big G Grimpeur saturday

Post by bernard turgoose »

Well the name certainly stood up to the challenge, 2900 metres of climbing and all fairly close together, Cath & started at about 8.35 & finished the 160k at about 4.40, we had no cafe stops but the 2 feed stations were well stocked at Uncleby & Huggate. The climbs started with Fimber then Burdale before the climb up & over the tunnel to Wharram le St ( we usually come down the other way on Kevin's rides), then across to Birdsall Brow & then down into Thixendale before the Uncleby climb & the feed station by which both of our bottles needed topping up, this was followed by a decent to near the bottom of Hanging Grimston, on which fortunately the gates had been left open allowing Cath to power up on her compact - well done Cath. We then had a decent down part of Leavening Brow before turning left for Leppington & Acklam village & then the climb up the steeper Acklam to the mast. After this the decent to Buttercrambe & Stamford Bridge, before heading across to Bishop Wilton & then the climb upto Givendale. On which the medical car slowed up as they past me asking if I was alright - what a serrvice petty they didn't have some replacement lungs available !!
Of course Cath was still up front - but we still had to get ourselves over to Huggate for a welcome feed - before heading for Warter & then towards Pocklington before turning left for Nunburnholme & the last climb where a photographic record of our suffering/efforts where logged. Then downhill to Londesbrough & into Market Weighton after which with a tail wind we pushed on back to Beverley, with an average speed for the whole ride of 12.6 mph with an actual in the saddle time of 7hrs 25 minutes.
How did the other Clifton riders who we were told had entered ( 2 I think)?
This could be a good challenge ride club run for the future,
Bernard

Really enjoyable ride - fantastic scenery and perfect weather. Thanks to Bernard for the lift out & the company.

Met some brand new hills and the meat pie, chips and peas were a nice touch at the end of my first Sportive.
the gates had been left open allowing Cath to power up on her compact
- I wish! in hindsight a compact might have been a good idea, there were a couple of points I started to panic that I might have to either get off or fall off... but it's got to make me better at going uphill in the long run I'm sure....kept telling myself that....

Definitely be up for doing it again next year.

so I turned round and rode up and down it again ( I think Howard would have expected that of me).
Yes, that's the spirit Ian! And it's a given, of course, that you were in the big ring for the WHB climb....

A fantastic exhibition of athletic ability by The Hub on Saturday, as he's modestly outlined above. What your post lacks in, erm, finesse Will it certainly makes up for in enthusiasm!

I think I know how Lance must feel now (er, if you'll forgive the somewhat presumptuous comparison) as I went “man on man” on the climbs with the Hub and was found, in the main, to be wanting.

Oh, and I do apologize for holding you up Will as we descended Park Rash! How on earth did you find the time to note our descent speed? (a snail like 3mph apparently; you could’ve at least added a nought on, poetic licence and all that).

Howard I was not meaning to offend you, I was not complaining about park rash I'd not have dared to go down that any faster it was scary as hell 3mph was fine.

How did I find the time to note it? A guess from my head from what speed it felt like, I wasent looking at my speedo that's for sure.

I've edited my post as it caused too much offence and proberbly causes people to make a false judgment of me.

No, No, Will! You hadn't upset me at all, far from it! I was simply attempting (& patently failing!) to be humorous in my remarks. I was gently pulling your leg, that's all. Please don't take everything (anything?) I write on here totally literally, er, except this, of course!
