Triathlon

Post by justsweat »

Dear All,

It was put to me, by Mark Antrobus on the Sunday ride, that maybe we should have a triathlete section to the club. Particulary as lots of members now do tri.

A few examples are

Jon Cocker - Nice Ironman 28th June 09
Amanda Vipond - various tri's including the Belgium Half Ironman in August
Mandy not sure of your surname - doing Steelman half IM in July
Stacey Eccles - doing Norseman in August
Anna Hatton - Little Beaver in May - should have been doing Steelman but for her crash - will be racing again by August.

I'm sure there are many more out there who have, or want to do triathlon and would like to do them under the Clifton name (Stacey & I race for a Midlands club at the moment at triathlon)

At the end of the season are the National Relays in Nottingham and I thought it might be good to put in a couple of teams to have some fun with.

The race is a 4 person relay, where you swim then rest, while your team mates swim, then bike and rest, then run and rest. Distances are 400m OW swim, 15km bike, 5km run.

The date is the 22nd August 09 at Nottingham, also the bike is a closed circuit.

Anyone interested let me know. Cost is £154 for a 4 person team, although it might be slightly more for non-BTF members.

Cheers

Indeed. And thanks for taking the initiative Brian.

Your list illustrates my point. I had no idea of above taking place.

And perhaps missing is 1 * Philip Graves.

Also i know Shaun Lawson has been busy and is I believe a more than useful swimmer as well as holding 3rd place in Spoco series.

I wonder whether adding a triathlon section to discussion board is a good starting point. With 3 events to go at you lot must have something to discuss?

Alternatively encourage people to send in reports of their activities / training etc. Am sure Cath would welcome for weekly update and make interesting reading here or in weekend roundups.

Interesting debate potential here. E.g. ? name change to Clifton Cycling and Triathlon Club to make it clear it's not just Cycling. This might attract new members. On the other hand does this muddy the waters about the core club activity, create potential conflicts of interest etc

A Tri section on the board here seems like a good idea but not sure about actual club structural changes to accommodate Tri. It's just my personal opinion (as a relative newbie) but it strikes me that if it ain't broke.....

Can't your athletes compete under the Justsweat name Brian?

Hi,

Serpentine Running Club, (2500 members) which is the biggest and most successful running clubs and one of the biggest triathlon clubs, with a large cycling base, a team of over 55 women did the RAAM last year, still calls itself Serpentine Running club.

Question would be what is the core activity of the club, if it is road racing, tt'ing, mtb'ing, audax's, sportifs. The core of triathlon is cycling as the majority of the event is cycling.

Serpentine just have different sections on their website. People will be attracted by word of mouth, about what a friendly and inviting club Clifton are, particulary campared with lots of dyed in the wool cycling clubs, not by a name change.

I think a triathlon section on the forum is a good idea - I would happily include stuff in the update (though people have to send it to me first!).

I don't see that the club would need any sort of structural/name changes - plenty of Tri clubs compete in time trials and road races after all. It would be great to have people doing lots of different activities under the Clifton CC banner.
