Weekend Round-up 16/17th May

Post by Dr Dave »

The H ride consisted of 8 riders last weekend. Kevin suggested the Cockayne loop anti-clockwise which suited fine. Chris C, Virginie, Pete K, John M, Ian H, Richard (sorry don't know surname!), Shaun and myself headed out via Sheriff Hutton, up Terrington bank then via Coneysthorpe to Fadmoor. John had to be back so turned here.

On the outwood leg of the Bransdale loop Pete advised Ian that the rest of us should continue whilst he had a mountain bike event on Sunday and so wouldn't be continuing at the same pace as the rest - hence we were down to 6 for the rest of the ride. A quickish lunch-stop was taken at the Ice Cream rooms cafe before returning via Ampleforth and the usual Alne/Tollerton run back to town.

It stayed dry essentially all way round - thanks to all for a good ride.

My climbing was pants, descended like a wimp, and the bits in between were more "flaneur" than "rouleur" but Etape du Dales was conquered. No stops other than checkpoints, an hour faster than last year's nearest equivalent ride in the White Rose Classic and with 100+ people between me and last place, as opposed to the 10 last year, I was not unhappy. However I'm in deep trouble - Mrs Mal thought it was 110km not 110 miles and I got a very serious rollocking when I got home.

110 miles for Willy and I too as we rode the 100k CTC ride from Malton Sunday - the miles add up when you ride out as well!

Arnie showed some young guns how it should be done in a fast moving little group. We enjoyed the company of Graham and Bill - especially enjoyed admiring the route sheet on rear of Grahams rack pack into the headwind.

Interesting route home via Huttons footbridge, Willy and i detouring off at top of Kirkham to return via Crambe and Sand Hutton.

Can I just say thanks to Shaun and Ian for waiting for me and towing me for the last 10-15 miles before we bumped into Kevin's group to which I attached myself so I could make the last few miles at a more sedate pace.

As Mark mentioned I rode the CTC 100 Km starting at Malton.
The majority of the riders were getting on a bit (age wise) but I managed to attach myself to a mixed age group of 7 riders from the Whitby Wheelers, who treated the event like a chain gang, even sprinting for village and town signs. They were a great bunch of lads and even waited for me when the pace got a bit silly. They told me they had clubs rides of
about 60 miles every Sunday and the average speed was usually around
21 to 22 mph, no wonder I felt rough when I got home. I must say that
I did enjoy it, even if my ride home in the rain wasn't very pleasant.

Managed to get a ride in Hull thurs road race at North Newbald where I was a reserve. Threw caution to the wind and decided not to take a spare tube/pump as the village was on the circuit so I reckoned I would be unlikely to be more than a couple of miles from the hq if distaster struck..........
which it did at half distance but at least it was only a couple of miles downhill on the flat tyre. A shame though as I was sure to have won (blind optimism is all I have left these days).
On the plus side I had first refusal at one of the best spreads I've seen in a hq for a long while so ten out of ten for this promotion. Next........

The Grimpeur prep ride to Castle Tea Rooms (oops, are we preparing for the ride or the cafes? ) progressed excellently.

5 girlies (Anna, Gill, Cath, Helen et moi) were chaperoned by Bernard into the wilds of the NY Moors.

We all felt very fit as we sailed along to Hutton le Hole, over to Rosedale, down the charming Fryupdale and wiggled our way to Castleton.

We then realised the reason for such rapid progress once we turned for the climb of Westerdale, which is the quieter ascent of Blakey Ridge. Felt like hours later we arrived at the top, but no speedy descent, more a team effort, huddled together and pedalling in 2s down to Gilamoor.

Over Surprise View and return leg via a dry ford, Welburn, Nunnington, Hovingham to complete 150km.

Splendid ride, great company and just about on target for the 180km?

See you at the square Sat 10am.

Three Clifronites that I knew of did the Etape caledonia on Sunday 17th and the car free roads were wonderful. Some locals ,opposed to the closed roads, kindly deposited thousands of carpet tacks on the road at a few sites close to each other. There were hundreds of punctures and the race was stopped for about one and a half hours. Quite cold in bare legs, but a road sweeper eventually made it safe again, although we had to descend from the only significant climb with caution. First group of fasties missed the tacks so their times were accurate. For the rest of us, meaningless.
Good fun despite this. My first mass participation event and the first wearing of my new Clifton jersey and the first decent outing for my new light bike. Where next? A time trial....perhaps.
