It seemed a hell of a lot faster than when I had a go in 2007 - or maybe thats because back then I set off in the first group! After only an 8 min warm up (due to the looooong que to register) my HR was at 182 for the first half hour - so some advice to others new to racing - give yourself plenty of time to warm up!

As was hinted at by the repeated requests for confirmation of who was turning up, it was near-mayhem last night with a massive field going off in four groups for the very un-technical Boroughbridge-Walshford circuit. As Richard noted, there was a big queue for signing-on; apologies if anyone from the club got there and didn't get a ride - I passed on the list earlier in this thread and was told by the organisers that they'd all be put on the start sheet.

I went off in the third group and, despite not exactly being a "well-oiled machine", enough people shared the work that we picked up the first two groups by about 2/3 distance. However we all got caught by the scratch group with about 5 miles to go and following the usual brief attacks it became a very wide, very scary, fast-moving bunch which headed towards the final roundabout. Everyone got round in one piece but the sprint back up to the finish line was a chaotic affair, which left most with some instinct for self-preservation rolling over the line out of the points.

A good work-out tho - average speed well over 26mph. Well done to all the Cliftonites, who seemed to be spending a fair bit of time towing their respective groups along!

Thanks to Phil I got a ride. That's a pint I owe you.

I went away in the 2nd group with Dave. Unsure of my fitness, I didn't do as much work as I could and should have done, only going through when I felt like it. Some time on the second lap the next group caught us containing I think all the other Cliftonites, caught not that much later by the scratch group. Whilst the speed increased, with it now being such a large group it was easy to sit in ( I worked much harder on the Scotton). I felt comfortable, so on the last straight before the roundabout it was time to get somewhere near the front, I wasn't naive enough to think I could contest the sprint, but it would be nice to finish in with the action. Unfortunately 60 cyclists all had the same plan and a fair few seemed quite happy to bring the whole group on to the deck at 25mph+ if people didn't get out of their way.

Not being equipped with that sort of bravery (or madness) I was struggling to make headway. Luckily not much further up the bunch was a group of the reassuring Red and Black and I made my way there to end up on Ian H's wheel on the inside approaching the final roundabout, just where I wanted to be, I thought Ian could tow me to a reasonable finish.

Going round the roundabout on Ian's wheel, a cyclist forced his way between us and it was either brake hard or run straight into him, then another did the same, out of the roundabout ready for hard acceleration and another cyclist swept across the front of me causing some extremely hard braking, got back going again looking up the road to see the head of the bunch already half way to the finish line. Rather took any ambition I had away so pedalled in with the rag tag tail enders at the back of the bunch.

Oh well, it was still an exciting (though scary) couple of hours and a good work out.

Looking forward to the next one already.

I may be a conservative - nay timid - individual but the impression you guys are creating doesn't inspire me to take up the TLI baton!

Theo Bos and Daryl Impey probably started in TLI, as did Graeme Brown :)

I really enjoyed last nights' TLi race, jogging for position up to the final roundabout, I came across Phil and thought I would follow him, which I did up to 100 yds before rb. Somehow, I then tagged onto another wheel and ended up coming out of the rb about 3rd, this didn't last long as I got swamped in the sprint, but good fun. It is good fun Dr Dave.

I'm not sure Theo Bos should be allowed to ride in any kind of competition after that particular move.

Sounds exciting - sorry I wasn't there. I've now found out, now that I've got my TLI memberhsip, that the series is full, with no more entries accepted (see the series website - http://www.yorkshiretliseries.net/ ). However, if people who've signed up for the series don't show up, it should be possible to race on a "standby" basis.

So, if anyone who did manage to sign up knows they won't be there next Tuesday, could they PM me or post here please? I'm hoping to wangle my way in to race somehow.

cheers,
tom

Hi Tom

I think it is only no more entries on the line, on the day. I would ring Cliff and maybe you can still pre enter.

I have paid for the series but I am not doing next week 5th May, so as a one off you could mention that also.

Thanks Dave - I did speak to Brenda and it really is closed for now. I guess enough people entered the whole series last week that they can't guarantee any more places.
I'll email suggesting a subsitution for next week.
thanks again

&%$@ £"?^ [Rude words deleted to protect the innocent].

Grrr, I'm in the same position as Tom - joined TLI pretty-much solely to be able to ride *some* of these events as my first foray into road riding (due to work / family / life commitments I decided not to enter for the full series and EOL instead when I was free…).

I’m still keen to use the TLI membership and get some racing done, so does anybody have any info on the Croft series they run (or any others in the area) - bearing in mind I'm a novice when it comes to racing and am looking for a safe option to help build my confidence.

I've also this year entered the Vets age group, so are there any other friendly, challenging-but-not-stupid events where novices are tolerated which I could be thinking about (albeit I don't want to spend another load of cash on membership of an organisation I'll probably not get a huge amount of use out of)?

Damn this popular sport - and if you read the cycling press you'd believe that road racing is drawings it's final breath!!

Jason.

Hi Jason

There are a couple of TLI options - the circuit races at Croft (Dave Cook's doing some of them and it'd be worth speaking with him) and the Thursday evening East Riding Road Race League events - the opening event being tomorrow. Would be worth contacting the organisers to see if there's space. They're on an interesting mix of circuits on the edge of the Wolds; bit of a drive from York but worth it if you can rustle up company and share travel.

LVRC events are excellent. They're pretty competitive but you can start by riding in an older age group than your own if you want a (relatively) gentle introduction. Upcoming races include the Ferryhill Wheelers RR on May 17th, Barton Wheelers RR on June 6th, Doncaster Wheelers RR on 14th, and the Tom Simpson RR on 21st (although the latter is VERY popular and usually very fast). Vic Sutton RR on July 5th and Tour of The Wolds on 19th. Well worth the (very reasonable) membership fee, and race entry is only £6.

Hi Jason

The Croft circuit series is also very popular but they allow alot more to start. I am not doing another Croft until 9th June but they are every Tuesday until 21st July.

I would ring the event organiser to check on booking procedure.

Phil,

You're on good terms with Cliff. Can I ask if you could confirm with him nearer the time who from Clifton has got a ride 05/05/09. I've entered it, but don't know if I'll get a ride. Just typical, about the only time I manage to get something like race fitness & I can't get a ride.

The ERRRL looks interesting - no website as such, but local clubs like Brid CC and others have the schedule - see http://www.barracudatriclub.com/detail_ ... cordID=271 .
Maybe we should organise a contingent one week in a spirit of inter-riding TLI co-operation  ?
A few of the races are at Little Weighton which is just over 30miles from York, a bit far for a rideout but an easy car trip.
