Vote for £50,000,000-worth of Lottery-Funded Cycle Routes

Sustrans, THE rock stars when it comes to building cycle/walkways, are one of 4 organisations on the shortlist to win The Peoples' £50 Million - a National Lottery Giveaway where we (the general public) get to vote for our favourite cause.

Sustrans are up against stiff competition - the Eden Project, Sherwood Forest and the Black Country Urban Park. Personal bias aside however, the Sustrans Connect2 bid stands out for being a UK-wide project that will enhance the lives of people in no fewer than 79 communities.

What's especially encouraging about Connect2 (especially if you have ever been less than impressed with local authority cycle paths that fade away, just when the road gets more dangerous) is that Sustrans is putting particular emphasis on building bridges and crossings over busy roads, rivers and railway lines to link up existing routes that were previously disconnected. Sustrans Connect2 will therefore benefit millions of us by making our everyday journeys safer and more stimulating.

However, to win this £50m (the biggest UK-wide investment in cycling and walking infrastructure since the start of the National Cycle Network) hundreds of thousands of us are going to have to vote for it. It's just like a general election - winner takes all. There is no second prize. If we don't bother to vote, Sustrans won't win.

We therefore urge you to vote for Sustrans Connect2. Then canvas your colleagues and chums (and their friends and colleagues) to do the same.

Voting for The Peoples' £50 Million takes place the week beginning 25 November. However, you (and your friends) can register your intention to vote now. Then Sustrans will email you a reminder when the voting actually kicks off.
