What is the Challenge?

The York Cycle Challenge is a fun, free competition to encourage people working or living in York to remember the joys and benefits of riding a bike. It's all about participation - which organisation or department can get the most members of staff cycling?

Organisations and their departments will compete across six size categories to see who can get the most members of staff to ride a bike for at least 10 minutes from Monday 14 March to Sunday 3 April 2011.

Participants can cycle wherever they feel comfortable and at any time - on an evening or at the weekend, to work or for leisure - and will log their rides on this website.

It's fun and easy to take part and there are lots of prizes to be won. So get a team together at your workplace, register here and get your bikes at the ready for the Challenge!

It's easy to take part!

1. Register on the website at http://www.yorkcyclechallenge.org.uk.
2. Ride a bike for at least 10 minutes between Monday 14 March and Sunday 3 April 2011.
3. Log your cycling on this website.
4. Encourage your friends and work colleagues to take part too!

Size Categories

There are six size categories to allow any sized organisation or department a good chance of winning: 500+ staff, 200-499 staff, 50-199 staff, 20-49 staff, 7-19 staff, 3-6 staff.

(Teams of 1 to 2 can record their cycling, win cinema and spot prizes, but are not eligible to win a Team Prize. It's too easy to get 100% participation with only 1 or 2!)

York Versus Cambridge Competition

York and Cambridge, both cycling cities, will be running a Workplace Cycle Challenge from Monday 14 to Sunday 3 April 2011. York has been challenged to compete with Cambridge in a York v Cambridge Cycle Challenge based on one simple measure:

Which city can encourage the most new cyclists to ride a bike during the Challenge period?

So come on York, let's get recruiting and get pedalling - the Challenge is on, and York's cycling reputation is at stake! Let's beat Cambridge and prove we're the best cycling city with the most new cyclists.

You will be able to see live results on this website throughout the competition.

Free Cinema Tickets

Remember - as an added incentive, if you encourage someone to ride a bike for at least 10 minutes for the first time in a year (a 'new cyclist') then we will send you both a free cinema ticket!

We've got 200 cinema tickets to give away once the Challenge starts on a first come first served basis, so get your work colleagues back on a bike and win a free night out at the cinema!

Find out about the free cinema tickets at http://www.yorkcyclechallenge.org.uk/cinema
