Great turn out, 13 riders, in the Square for a St. Andrew's Day Inters ride to Helmsley on Saturday. A bright and frosty morning, some minor patches of ice around and a bit chilly early on but certainly a major improvement on the damp, wet conditions of the previous weekend.

Route out via Haxby and Strensall gave early indication that the ride was likely to split into two groups and the road surface to Sheriff Hutton claimed another victim when newbie Sean suffered a double puncture - front and rear. Sean said we should just go on and he’d either catch us at the cafe stop or just do his own ride. Reluctantly, we agreed, swapped phone numbers and I set off up the road, waiting at the Whenby turnoff when I realised nobody else was with me. The K-Ride, consisting of Bernard, DaveI and MarkB were first to pass, followed by GrahamT and NickM and it transpired that Sean had broken a tyre lever and so the rest of the group had stayed to assist. IanW cycled back towards us from Brandsby and the whole group re-formed before the Stearsby junction.

We split into two groups after the climb to Yearsley and that left ClaireG, IanW, NickM, GrahamT, AlistairC, JohnB and I as a seven for White Horse Bank via Coxwold and Kilburn. The autumnal colours of Rievaulx were extremely tempting but to avoid any ice and gain some time back we stuck to the A170 all the way to Helmsley. Not the usual Clifton Saturday Ride type of road, actually the first time I’ve ever ridden that section in its entirety, but on a clear, calm, relatively traffic-free day it was the sensible thing to do and actually provided some great views and a really nice descent to the cafe stop where the other group were already seated.

Retained the same group formations for the home leg, we returned via Harome, Nunnington, Hovingham, Farlington and Sheriff Hutton while the others “chose” Slingsby and Castle Howard. Just under 70 miles, fine weather and a really good day out. Bike wasn’t even particularly mucky by the end but, yes Claire, I did wash it on Sunday rather than leaving it until the Saturday morning before the next ride.

9 in the Square on a cold Sunday morning for a ride to Pateley.
The gritter had run out of sodium chloride on the outskirts of Panel, so we rerouted up Pennypot Lane and Darley Head and avoided all ice to the cafe on the main street.
Back over Brimham Rocks and home just before dark with 130km on the clock.
Thanks for the ride chaps.
