Yesterday I reconnoitered the route as far as Hexham, and can tell you that if you are allergic to hills, heather and wide open spaces this ride is not for you! But for others: my ride was fabulous: sign up for this Clifton 2-day ride into Northumberland, with 125mph return by train.
The details so far:
Overnighting in Edmundbyers YHA Sat eve, all booked for 6 + 3 cost £12pp.
Good eve meal menu in great next door pub.
History note: Edmundbyers is next to Derwent reservoir where the WW2 Dam Buster bouncing bombs were tried out.
Route day 1 from York (about 80-85 miles): Richmond - Barnard Castle - Stanhope - Edmundbyers...2 cafe strategy ride time 3.5 + 1.5 + 2.5 hours approx.
Route day 2 to Berwick-on-Tweed. I will be riding this next Sunday to sus the best roads out, but broadly it will take Hexham then accross to Amble and up along the coast and castle route to Alnmouth and Berwick.
There are trains back from Berwick at 17.10, 18.55 and 19.15, the earlier 2 also stopping at Alnwick, as a shorther route fall-back strategy. All stop at Newcastle. Journey time to York 2 hours.
If bought now the fare will be less than £15 with free bike reservation, and I'd like to get these asap to make sure we get the low fare, and get the bike spaces.
Now I need names confirmed, e-mail wh6@york.ac.uk or txt 0797 4867301
So I had 3 great riding days this weekend, Sat on a pretty pacey Kevin ride, 3 hours on the Sunday club run where we socialised with some Red Kites and then Northumbrian Northern Heights yesterday. Before taking the train back from Newcastle met Ian Hagyard and friends in a Newcastle bar celebrating completion of their 6th!!! C2C ride. But that will be his story!
