THE BARNESBURY CYCLING CLUB

PRESENT

THE SAM WALTON MEMORIAL BORDER TROPHY ROAD RACE

“Held under the technical regulations of British Cycling”

On Sunday the 19th of August 2007, at The Town Hall and Mechanics Institute, Main Street, Wark, Northumberland.

Sam Walton was a very popular member of the Barnesbury Cycling Club, who sadly died in a motorcycling accident in 2000. Sam was the Barnesbury Junior BAR in 1989, club hill climb champion in 92, 93 and 99. Club road race champion in 92 and 99. Barnesbury BAR in 89, 90 and 99. He also won several National student titles and was both NDCA and Manchester and Dist. BAR.

Please note the race allows for entry on the line, for every entry on the line received £11 will be added to the prize fund any additional prizes will be posted.
Please note the event headquarters have moved to Wark, due to the temporary traffic lights, the course has therefore been amended. The amended course is detailed below.

Riders will assemble at 10.25am outside the race headquarters, at 10.30am the race will begin its neutralised section. The race will turn right at the T junction in the village onto the B6320 to head North ward. The race will continue past the temporary traffic light at Houxty on the Northern edge of the Wark. The race will start proper 50m North of the temporary traffic lights. Riders are to obey the temporary traffic lights and come to a stop if required during the neutral section. Then race then continues North on the B6320 to Bellingham, where the circuit begins as the race passes St. Oswalds’s church, an intermediate sprint competition will take place on the races first passage through Bellingham, the sprint will take place by the green which is just past the fire station. The race will stay on the B6320 through Bellingham then onto the prime hill at Hareshaw/Linden Hill (direction Otterburn). There will be no KOM points awarded on the first or last assents, riders should note the location of the prime line as they pass. The prime is basically in the middle of nowhere, there will be prime flags. The race will continue to Meg’s Moss, where the race will turn left (M) onto unclassified road direction Greenhaugh. The race will continue to the T junction near Greenhaugh Hall, where the race will turn left (M) on to unclassified road. In Lanehead the race will turn left (M) onto the C200, to head east through Charlton and to the St. Oswald’s junction in Bellingham to complete one lap. The race will complete a further 5 laps. After six laps the race will again turn left at saint oswald’s, then left again at Meg’s Moss, and then left again at Greenhaugh Hall. But when the race reaches Lanehead for the seventh time the race will not turn left. Instead the race will continue straight on down the hill. After crossing the Tyne, the race will turn left onto unclassified road, sign posted Birks (M), shortly after this turn there is a narrow humped back bridge riders are to exercise extreme caution at this bridge. The race continues east bound, past Hesleyside back to Bellingham. In Bellingham the race turns right (M) onto the B6320 (south bound). The race finishes at the top of the climb out of Bellingham, at Whitewall Nook.

I had a mail off Ali Kay, who is riding the Border Trophy, advertising the fact that there was such a small field and such a large number of points up for grabs. I would do this event but have entered Rutland CCs race in South Yorks for better or worse.
I think Al is driving up and has space. The Border Trophy is an Elite race but it isn't a particularly sparkling field so far. The biggest challenge will be the race distance at 90 miles and the big climbs, but the roads up there are fab and the race is certain to be an adventure!
Al's e mail address is alikay101@hotmail.com
