Following on from this evening's committee meeting I said I'd kick off a thread on here so anyone who's thinking of doing road racing this year can see what everyone else is planning on doing - whether for safety in numbers, sharing lifts, picking people's brains about circuits etc.

So, I'm planning on the following for the next few months:-

(BC = British Cycling, LVRC = veterans, TLI = The League International)

Neil White Memorial Pursuit BC 11/03
Barton Wheelers LVRC 24/03
Mercury RR LVRC 15/04
Halifax Imps LVRC 22/04
Boroughbridge TLI 24/04 first event fortnightly until 31/07
A1 Classic LVRC 29/04
Wakefield evening series BC 16/05
Hull Thursday RR BC 20/05
Keith Simpson RR BC 26/05
Ferryhill Wheelers BC 10/06
Wakefield evening series BC 13/06
Tom Simpson Memorial RR LVRC 24/06

...not too sure after that.

Next!

If all goes to plan...

On a quest to finish in the peloton (or better):

Do some of the Boroughbridge TLI from May onwards (anyone got TLI's web address?).
Wakefield Evening Series BC 13/06/07
Wakefield Evening Series BC 11/07/07
York Cycleworks BC 22/07/07...anyone know the route, if it goes over Bransby Bank or Yearsley, I'd be wasting my time.
Seacroft Wheelers (Wistow) BC 12/08/07

Cheers Steve. York Cycleworks, perhaps not a good idea for me. I'll have to think about that one.

Hi Broomwagon

Three of the four circuits used for the Boroughbridge TLI races (twice each making eight events) are pretty flat. The fourth still isn't exactly alpine - the one climb is the drag up from Boroughbridge to Kirby Hill. Go for it!

As Steve says the Cycleworks RR is a slightly odd mixture of 9/10ths fairly flat and fast, with the last mile or so to the line - up Yearsley Bank - the only big climb.

You need to get a bit older - there are lots of vets races on flat-to-rolling circuits, so we don't get too out of breath...

In a quest to get my moneysworth out of licence and entry fees and hopefully reach veteran status next year with my second cat status still intact, I'm planning some if not all of the following early season adventures:

11/3 Neil Whit Pursuit BC all cats (I'm eol Phil if you need a lift)
24/3 Harrogate Nova 25 TT
01/4 Bridlington CC RR BC E123
15/4 Dave McKay Mem RR BC 234
21/4 Otley CC 10 TT
29/4 Sloan Trophy RR BC 234
06/5 Stan Robson Mem RR BC E123
13/5 Steve Rigby Mem RR BC 234
16/5 Wakefield CC Eve RR BC 234
27/5 Keith Simpson Mem RR BC 234

A couple of timetrials in there for diversity and because there was nothing else on.

Broomwagon - the "hardest" circuit on your list is the Wakefield Eve one - the Cycleworks course is a big ringer for 1.5 hrs - its just the last 3 mins that are pretty tough - not so much a question of climbing ability but pain management and ambition!

Am planning to do the following:
25/3 Aire Valley RR
1/4 April Fools Race
15/4 Dave McKay Mem
22/4 Hambleton RR
29/4 Sloan Trophy
5/5 Plan B 2-Day
13/5 Steve Rigby Mem
27/5 Keith Simpson Mem
3/6 Yorkshire Divisional
Plus some mid-week races down south to try and rack up a few points and stop me sitting in the bar all evening!
Good luck this season guys....

Paul M - I'd guessed the Wakefield CC evening events would be flattish being out near Pontefract. Am I wrong, if so I'll perhaps have to forget those.

Like My Bike - The East Riding Series may be a better option for me being handicap events. Have you done any before and have you any thoughts re the course and the races that may be of use in deciding whether to do them or not?

If they use the same circuits as last year, the Wakefield events are run on two circuits. One of them's a shortish triangle of roads near Royston which is a flat-ish start/finish leg, hill down on next, hill up on third. All big ring, nothing too challenging, although I wasn't wild about the safety because of narrow roads and fast traffic. Other circuit is near Sharlston and is quite up and down, with a long grind of uphill on the back of the circuit.

Plenty of Road Race action for 2007

How about targetting a couple of events for maximum club entries

Best events would seem to be;

15th April - Dave McKay Mem RR BC cats 234
Closing date 01.04.2007

27th May - Keith Simpson Mem RR BC cats 234
Closing date 06.05.2007

Any thoughts?

Why only a couple? :?

I agree that it'd be great to see as many Clifton riders in as many races as possible, but it's finding ones that (a) everyone's eligible for and (b) stands a chance of enjoying! Our fast lads are 2nd cats now so can't do Regional B (3rds/4ths races) and some of the Regional A (2nds/3rds/4ths) events are on fairly hard circuits - Keith Simpson's for example is pretty hilly. Plus some of us will be doing a fair few vets races on w/ends which clash with BC races. But.. ..targeting a few would be excellent, and it'd be good to turn up mob-handed at the Tuesday night TLI series and really ride it as a team!

Being fairly new to road racing having only done 7/8 circuit races such as Croft and Boroughbridge last year, which are around 30/35 miles in length dependant on course, which events in this region would be a good introduction to BC races, Im no lightweight so hilly events would kill me but rolling courses shouldnt be too bad. Ive little knowledge of courses in the area so any recomendations would be most welcome. I will be riding the TLI series at Boroughbridge and hope to see many other Clifton riders there this year.
