Phil, that must have been a really tough way to find out - by ringing the YEP.
We're rather glum here in Riccall too. We knew Gary for about 10 years and he was always someone I had great respect for. I admired him for doing a worthwhile job and despite the levels of responsibility keeping the work - life balance about right. I admired his enthusiasm for cycling and for the outdoors in general.
I remember some great stories about the Mountain Rescue flying him off Mount Cook in NZ. I remember him staying with the front group on the Reliability.... on a mountain bike. When Jason fell in a ditch on a clubrun it was Gary who realised he'd broken his back and immobilised him while the ambulance came.
This is all a great shock.
