Why dont we ban any light weight road bike from the club road race? Anything with carbon wheels or carbon frame should not be allowed to be used. Lets say anything under 20lbs. That would make it even wouldnt it?

If we are intent on going back to 1990, why dont we all ride 22lb + roadbikes, without STI's and dual pivot brakes?

All good logical suggestions arent they? I'm looking forward to my next mtb race - no suspension allowed, only rigid bikes...

Get with it Clifton...

Was there some context to that post that I've missed?

Charlie me old fruit,

29 viewings of this thread and I doubt anyone has a clue what you're on about!

I've been away and thought about it and I presume its something to do with the RR. While I don't know the details I know there's some rule about riding the same bike in the prologue and road stage. Doesn't sound worth getting excited about..... in either way....

Charlie, if you want to have a debate about it I'd suggest you lay out your arguements without all the sarcasm - you might then get a response!!

Charlie comments relate to the rule about using the same bike for the Time Trial & RR, I can understand Charlie's frustration which obviously was nt the intended outcome.

Our thinking was to create a more even event, with the focus on rider ability. The majority of road men dont have a TT bike and hopefully the fast rider will win.

Ah. Now I understand what the point is. For a lower cat race I think it makes sense (keeps the costs down). For a higher cat one, it wouldn't.

As for the 'moving with the times' thing, yes, you have a point there. But if you just wanted to ride fast you wouldn't ride races limited by UCI rules. Give me a fully streamlined low-rider recumbent and I'd give Kevin Dawson a run for his money in a flat TT. The entirety of cycle sport is defined by some pretty arbitary rules.

I don't see the problem with what Andy's done. The good timetriallists will still hammer the rest of us, just the time gaps will be smaller. Surely the prologue is basically a way of splitting up the final positions of a field that may finish the RR in a bunch (or a few bunches), and it'll do that perfectly okay with road bikes for both stages.

Come on Charlie, you're part of the club now - everything the club does relies on someone giving up time (and often the chance to ride) to organise it. Get involved and help steer it where you think it should go - Andy's got his work cut out making this happen!

Good post Phil

So why in a lower category race are we encouraging dangerous riding? Maybe not everyone has a TT bike, but everyone has a pair of tri bars (everyone that wants them that is). This is ludicrous and simply promotes the dodgy elbows on bars, holding onto cables position. For those that chose not to use tri bars, it is simply that - their choice, why penalise everyone else for the minority? Tri bars only cost as much as a tire. The vast majority have them and would use them. Now most will simply pretend they have tri bars - you watch...

I also want to make clear that I am not criticising Andy here. He's taken on a big task and is something I dont think I could do. I just think this subject should have been made more open for discussion.

Also, I'm not an old fruit.

Hm. Fair point.

"Now most will simply pretend they have tri bars"

Why didn't you calmly state that in your first post?

If everybody thinks this is a likely problem it can be mitigated by a polite request on the start line. You sometimes get "Head down riding costs lives" posters on a bill-board at the start of TTs....

However there are many ways to ride a bike dangerously......

I think the irony is that it will make bugger-all difference what bike you ride for the prologue - your low-pro may be a couple of seconds faster on the rolling bit, your road bike a couple of seconds faster up the finish climb. What the rule does do it stop you feeling obliged to get all the TT gubbins out and allow you to enjoy the racing without being fettered by extra bikes and who knows how many pairs of spare wheels.

What will be far more important will be judging the pace, over-cook it early on and you'll die a thousand deaths on that climb. I reckon the spread of times could be pretty big.

Fruitily

"this subject should have been made more open for discussion"

For everyone's info: of course the best way to influence what the club does is to come along to the OGM on 18th September where we'll plan out the calendar for next year, time and venue details to follow in an Update.
