+1 for Schwalbe studded tyres. They really work well on sheet ice, black ice, and compacted snow. It is possible to slide on semi-compacted and melting snow, because the top layer can give way. But then if there was absolutely no risk they ...

Chapeau. Even if I was fit, which I'm not, I doubt I would have ventured out so far, starting so early, and for so long, in those temperatures. My hands have been like five frozen fish-fingers after just my 20 minute commute this week, and that is with two gloves per hand.

Sadly, you went too early ...

Yes they look the business but I guess they will only fit bikes that have the proper clearance for mudguards plus the suitable eyelets for attachment to the frame!

Ooooh, fresh tarmac. You don't realise how much rough road surfaces slow you down until your wheels hits a patch of, usually all too brief, newly laid surface - that or take a trip to the Continent.

Hopefully for £820,000 they have done a proper job not just put down a layer of chippings and a ...

Re: Weekend Roundup - Halloween w/e

I rode up to Tan Hill (then back with the aid of a train from Northallerton.) I mention this solo effort not because it was any great endeavour (although it was my first 100 mile ride since April due to a knee injury) but because Swaledale and Arkengarthdale were absolutely stunning. If you want to ...

Dave I'A commented that we should charge the farmer for the laundry bills resulting from the brown stuff; one hot wash later my jacket still has a brown stripe up the back so I'm starting to think it was maybe a good idea!

#573 in the list of things cyclists have to put up with that non-cycling ...

Re: Bike Servicing

I've found these books to be excellent guides to building up and repairing bikes. The only downside is the occasional need for an American-to-English dictionary, and a torque conversion chart from foot-pounds to Newton meters. They can be found in most UK-based bookstores.

To answer your original ...

I've used up my reserves of tact and diplomacy for the rest of the year. But I didn't mean to imply the event was badly run. For a first attempt, and with just barely enough staff, I think Phil did a very good job. As he said, some things didn't work so well in practice, and could be improved if it ...

The crossings issue really revealed the need for a lot more helpers. Probably minimum two club members per crossing, doing at most two hour stints: one to release the gates on the opposite side from the hired security bloke, and one halfway back to the previous crossing, or around the preceding bend ...

They are running out of those, because their deal with Lynskey has ended. I read somewhere they plan to source their titanium frames from Van Nicholas instead, but those have yet to appear on their new web site.
