Hi Paul

thanks for the question sir.

Its good to hear that your lad is getting into cycling. My main advice would be to let him be the guide in many ways.

Let him have a go at distances he genuinely fancies and you think are realistic, the thing is he will stop 'naturally' on the day long before ...

I am away sunning myself on camping sites in France for the next ten days but I have printed these notices off and will have a think while sipping my cheap plonk.
In the meantime, if anyone else could kindly give some detailed accounts of how they prepare mentally for rides it would be really ...

Thanks for sending the diet in.
My apologies but I am away camping in France for the next 10 days but I will analyse this when I get back and let you know as close as we can as to exactly what you ate.

As for Robs offer to have a go next ride, I would love to but I dont think my mountain bike would ...

Hi Arthur
You are right in stating the debate is out on caffeine and as I said the problem is I have no idea how much people were drinking, how much they drank a day (I have no idea, I will be honest, as to how much you need a drink to 'immunise' the body to be habituated) etc so I have taken an ...

Sorry it has taken a while to reply but I had to get hold of a computer in our lab which has dietary analysis to figure this one out!Right, let’s have a look at what was needed and then figure out if you got it.

If you cycled 160 miles in 9 hours that’s averaging a pace of about 17.5 miles an hour ...

lactate threshold estimation

Hi Michael
thanks for the question and it is an important one to get the most out of your training. Though the pasta & water diet is a vital step in the right direction!
My own understanding of lactate threshold estimation for cycling is again from good old Friel. I use this table presented in the ...

some sport psychology notes on understanding Fear

As promised, some sport psychology notes on understanding Fear

To beat fear you must recognise it, understand it and neutralise it

Fear is a strange beast for a rider. It can, to pinch a phrase from some other sport psychologists, act as either an Achilles Heel or Herculean Muscles.

Fear is a ...

Hi Phil

thanks for getting back with more details and keeping me away from daft house buying programs on daytime tv. I find it amazing that the telly flashes on programs for buying million pound houses and luxurious locations at a time when the only people who can afford them are at work. Why is it ...

a good question as motivation towards the end of many sporting seasons is harder to maintain. Obviously cycling has the summer season and it gets that bit harder with the warmer weather affecting not only your physiology but also the holiday traffic deciding to clog up normally quieter roads!

first ...

there is nothing like being dosed up on anti-biotics and then getting the hard questions first!

I guess my first way of approaching these questions, and I know it is the wrong way, is to pose a question back and ask in what way do you feel you are working hard but your heart rate is not getting ...
